Bare Mineral Makeup
May 31, 2009

Just a few months ago, a new line of cosmetic product known as Bare Mineral Makeup has been introduced in the market and because of its popularity many companies jumping to have this kind of product under their umbrella.

Before we jump to any conclusion about its usefulness we must know what this Bare Mineral Makeup actually is and what ingredients it contains. Oxford dictionary defines mineral as “an inorganic natural substance”. Loosely speaking a mineral means any substance that is neither animal nor vegetable.  And Bare Mineral Makeup means any product that has mineral as its "main ingredient". So as little as one mineral can be in your Bare Mineral Makeup.

There is a list of few of the main minerals which could be the part of your favorite product and also how they benefit to its users.

Bismuth oxychloride - translucent mineral with fair absorbance and good adhesion. Used to add shine to mineral makeup formulas. (Caution:  may cause allergic reactions or breakouts)

Boron Nitride - Mineral with average coverage and high adhesion qualities. Light and silky texture added to formulas to increase adhesion and slip.

Kaolin Clay - Average coverage, high absorbance & adhesion. Creamy mineral used in very small amounts. (Caution:  avoid using lots of this product on the skin as it will look cakey)

Magnesium strearate
- Average coverage, matte, high adhesion mineral

Micronized titanium dioxide - More expensive, more translucent (more uv protection than regular titanium dioxide)

Rich starch - Translucent , considered to be a skin soother and emollient

Sericite Mica - translucent mica with fair absorbance and good adhesion. Used to add shine.

Talc - translucent silky mineral, has less of a dehydrating effect than Kaolin clay.

Titanium dioxide white - high coverage mineral whitener. Natural uv protection.

Zea Mays
- technical name for cornstarch, very translucent with good absorbance and silky texture. Poor adhesion alone so needs to be combined with minerals of a higher adhesion (kaolin clay)

Now comes the question what makes Bare Mineral Makeup so special and so popular. The answer to this question is its usefulness. Because of all the natural ingredients in mineral makeup it can actually be good for your skin. It is great for people with dry sensitive skin or people who suffer from skin conditions such as "rosacia". Mineral makeup has skin soothers and anti inflammatory that sit nice on the skin. It isn’t great for people who suffer for acne as it will not give a great coverage.

Mineral makeup comes in many different forms with the most popular one being "loose mineral powder” with its medium to full coverage and silky smooth finish. A great way to apply this makeup is with a "kabuki brush". A short handled brush with flat but very dense hair. MAC cosmetics which has a brand new displayer of mineralized eye shadows which you can use wet, mineralized blush, pressed and loose mineralized powder and of course mineral satin finish fluid. There are 77 different minerals in MAC makeup. Some of the most popular brands are of course "bare essentials,  pure Natural Mineral Makeup from the Earth. Bare Essentials uses only the finest ingredients in its products. Made with crushed minerals from the earth, 100% pure bare Minerals:

Another popular Bare Mineral Product is SPF 15. Bare Minerals SPF 15 Foundation looks like a powder—yet it's NOT a powder. It feels like a cream and buffs on like silk, giving skin a natural luminosity that stays true all day. All ages and skin types can benefit from bare Minerals—especially those concerned with skin sensitivities, allergies, scars, blemishes, rosacea, wrinkles and pigmentation. The foundation provides impeccable coverage for every skin type and skin tone, and also protects with a natural SPF 15 broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. Bare Minerals SPF 15 Foundation carries the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation. And bare Minerals SPF 15 Foundation is just the beginning. Bare Minerals offers creamy, feather-light color for all over your face, cheeks and eyes.
